Why the Right Haircare Routine Is Important

Beautiful, voluminous hair isn’t just a matter of genetics — it’s also about making the most of the hair you have. Thin hair often lacks natural bounce and fullness, and factors like damage, dryness, or hair loss can make the problem worse.

Now for the good news: With the proper care and attention,
you can improve your hair’s health, hydration, and shine while creating the
appearance of more volume. By choosing products with ingredients that promote healthy hair (and avoiding harmful ones), building a regimen, and staying consistent day after day, you can help your hair thrive.

What a Volume-Enhancing Hair Routine Looks Like

Building a haircare routine tailored to thin or fine hair involves selecting products that add body and volume without weighing your locks down. You don’t need an entire closetful of products (on the contrary, less is more for fine hair), but you do need the right formulas.

A basic volume-enhancing hair routine should include:

  • A thickening, scalp therapy shampoo made without sulfate detergents
  • A conditioner that hydrates strands without adding weight or greasiness
  • A lightweight volume enhancer that you apply to your roots, made with revitalizing ingredients

Choosing the Right Products

When it comes to thin hair, choosing the right shampoo and conditioner is crucial. Opt for formulas free of sulfate detergents, as these ingredients can strip the hair of natural oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. Look for products labeled "volumizing" or "thickening," which are specifically designed to enhance fine hair.

Our Thickening Shampoo and Thickening Conditioner are formulated with specialized ingredients to optimize scalp health while cleansing and nourishing compromised, dull, lackluster, or thinning hair. Both products contain loquat leaf to help with thinning hair, panthenol to hydrate and improve shine, and biotin to support hair volume and strength for thicker-looking, fuller-bodied hair. They also contain menthol, another ingredient often recommended for thinning hair, which delivers a cooling effect that can help your scalp feel invigorated and awakened. The shampoo also features willow bark, which gently exfoliates the scalp to improve overall hair health.

Just as important as choosing the right shampoo and conditioner is selecting a volume enhancer that delivers key benefits for fine, thinning hair. Our Volume Enhancing Foam is made with RevitaLash® Science to revitalize, strengthen, and volumize hair while helping to combat breakage and brittleness. When applied to the roots of wet or dry hair daily, it delivers a true transformation for thin hair. Unlike sticky serums, its lightweight foam formula is oil-free and feels weightless.

Why RevitaLash® Science for Fine, Thinning Hair?

If you’ve used our lash or brow serums, you know how well our proprietary technology works. Volume Enhancing Foam is physician-developed with the same exclusive BioPeptin Complex® you’ll find in RevitaLash® Advanced and RevitaBrow® Advanced, formulated specifically to transform fine, thinning hair.

Why is our BioPeptin Complex® the key to stronger, healthy-looking lashes, brows, and hair? It’s all about the synergy of ingredients in the complex, which include lipids, peptides, biotin, and panthenol. Together, these ingredients help condition, strengthen, and soften hair while defending from breakage and brittleness.

The results don’t lie: In a 4-week consumer study of 33 women and men using Volume Enhancing Foam, 97 percent said their fine hair looked/felt fuller and more voluminous. And 94 percent said their thinning hair looked thicker, healthier, and nourished.

Do’s & Don’ts to Maximize Your Hair’s Volume

Achieving and maintaining voluminous hair requires a holistic approach. Let’s explore the do’s and don’ts to ensure you're helping your hair reach its full potential:

DO Embrace Heat Styling in Moderation

Heat styling can be a valuable tool for creating volume, but too much heat can lead to hair breakage—so moderation is key. A well-placed wave or curl can create the illusion of thicker hair. Just remember to use a heat protectant spray to shield your strands from
potential damage, and avoid using tools on the hottest setting. Try to heat style your hair no more than a few times a week (if you wash your hair every other, or every two days, this shouldn’t be a problem).

DON’T Overdo It with Heavy Styling Products

While hairsprays and texturizers can boost your hair’s volume, an overload of heavy product can build up on your hair and weigh it down. Opt for lightweight styling products, and avoid formulas that are too heavy or moisturizing for your hair type. If you’re a
regular styling product user, you might benefit from a clarifying shampoo every week or so.

DO Stick to a Hair Washing Schedule

How often should you wash fine or thinning hair? It depends on your hair type and lifestyle. If your hair is naturally oily, shampooing daily might work for you — or if your strands are fragile and dry, every few days might be a better schedule. What matters is
that you cleanse your scalp regularly to avoid excessive sebum buildup, which can be bad news for your hair health.

DON’T Skip Regular Trims

Regular trims are crucial for maintaining healthy, voluminous hair. Split ends can make your hair look thinner and less vibrant. Schedule regular trims to keep your locks in optimal condition, promoting the look of fullness.

DO Try Highlights or Lowlights

A flat, dull hair color can draw attention to your hair’s sparseness. Instead, add dimension to your hair color with highlights or lowlights (or both) to create the illusion of fullness and
movement.

DO Switch Up Your Part

Wearing your hair parted in the same spot day after day can lead to flatness at the crown of your head. Try alternating between a center and a side part, or even just moving your part an inch or so next time you style your hair to give your roots a boost of volume.

Now You Can Style Your Hair

There are a number of hairstyles that can help create volume for fine and thinning hair. Whether you choose a bouncy blowout, textured ponytail, full-looking braid, or another look, your thickening haircare routine will help your hair look voluminous, feel thicker and fuller, and perform better.

How to Apply Thickening & Volumizing Hair Products: Step by Step

Now that you’ve chosen the right products for your fine or thinning hair, it’s time to learn how to apply them. The correct application of volumizing products is crucial for achieving the best results. Let's break down the process step by step:

thickening shampoo

Step 1: Start with Thickening Shampoo

Begin with a small amount of Thickening Shampoo. Focus on the roots where hair tends to be flatter. Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp in a circular motion, and work through wet hair from roots to tips.

Allow to sit for one to two minutes. To rinse, use lukewarm water, as hot water can strip the hair of essential oils, making it more prone
to breakage.

thickening conditioner

Step 2: Follow with Thickening Conditioner

Our Thickening Conditioner contains scalp therapy ingredients and won’t weigh down hair — which means it’s designed to be applied from roots to ends. Apply to wet hair, focusing on the scalp, and massage in a circular motion.

Work through hair from root to tips. Allow to sit for one to two minutes to allow the ingredients to work their magic, then rinse thoroughly.

Step 3: Apply a Volume Enhancer to Roots

Our Volume Enhancing Foam can be applied to wet or dry hair, so you can use it on wash days or non-wash days. To apply to shorter hair, pump foam onto hands and massage into scalp and the roots of hair.

For longer hair, separate hair into sections and apply nozzle directly onto head, pumping to release product as you go. Massage the foam thoroughly into the scalp and the roots of your hair, making sure not to oversaturate your hair.
